The Tata Nano — Navaratna

One for the jewel carriageway: World's cheapest new car coated in £3m of gold, silver and gems. The world's cheapest new car has been turned into one of the planet's most expensive after it was covered with £3 million worth of bling. The Tata Nano, which normally sells for under £2,000, has been coated in gold, silver and gems in recognition of India's booming economy and 5,000 year-old jewellery trade. Thirty artists were employed to decorate the tiny car in 80kg of 22 carat gold, 15kg of silver and 10,000 semi precious stones and gems. 03more images after the break...

Flashy motor: Today Tata unveiled its 'Nano' car crafted in gold, silver and gem stones in Mumbai, India, and below the amount of precious metals and stones used in the one-off design is shown clearly side on. Billionaire businessman Ratan Tata - who recently bought Jaguar Land Rover to add to his collection of car companies - ordered the one-off design to celebrate the strength of his country's growing wealth and mark its history. Paying homage to 5,000 years of jewellery tradition in India, Tata Motors said it had created the world's first 'jewellery car'. Unveiling: Ratan Tata, chairman of Tata Group, standing next to the car which he says celebrates 5,000 years of jewellery making in India. Fascinated: People stare at the Goldplus car covered in 80kg of 22 carat gold, 15kg of silver and 10,000 semi precious stones and gems.  Aimed at emerging middle class, the original Nano that launched with a 100,000-long customer waiting list in 2008 has seen sales plummet.
Founded: 1945

Headquarters: Mumbai, India

Profits: £1.3bn in 2010/2011

Employees: 50,000

Sales per month: 75,000 vehicles

In August the Mumbai-based group shipped just 1,202 units, down 88 per cent from April's 10,012 units. Analysts blame the Nano's poor safety record as several incidents of the cars spontaneously bursting into flames were widely reported. Its existing Nano customers were offered a safety upgrade to its electrical and exhaust systems. But despite the problems the company announced on Monday it would invest £355 million in building a new engine plant at Jaguar Land Rover near Wolverhampton.

El Peñon de Guatape - Colombia

A massive stone rising over 650 feet out of the flat ground of Guatape, Colombia, the Piedra de Penol or El Peñon de Guatape was once worshiped by the Tahamies Indians. By the 1900s, the massive 10-million-ton rock was seen by local farmers as a nuisance, a giant version of the rocks that the farmers regularly dug out of their fields.

In 1954 a group of friends—supposedly at the urging of a local priest—climbed the rock using a series of boards wedged into a crack. These were the first people known to have climbed El Peñon de Guatape. (It is unknown whether the Tahamies had a way of ascending the stone.) Climbing the huge stone took five days, but the top of the rock revealed both beautiful views and a new species of plant, Pitcairma heterophila. The rock soon became a modest tourist attraction.

The rock, which is almost entirely smooth, has one long crack, the one that the climbers used in ascending it. In the crack was later wedged a 649-step masonry staircase, the only way to get to the top of the Piedra de Penol. In the 1970s, the area was dammed, and the view from the rock changed: It now overlooks a dramatic series of lakes and islands.

Today, you can ascend the rock (apparently owned by a local family, though also designated by Colombia as a "national monument") for 2 US dollars. There you'll find a few religious relics and a three-story lookout tower.

Miss USA 2012 - Olivia Culpo

Olivia Culpo became Miss USA 2012 Sunday night during the 61st annual pageant after winning support for her comments about transgender pageant contestants.

The Miss USA pageant was held Sunday night at Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. Presided over by Donald Trump, the 51 contestant pageant was narrowed down slowly to just five by the time the final question round came about.

One of the most controversial questions asked was given to eventual winner Olivia Culpo, of Rhode Island. Culpo was passed the "special" question submitted by fans via Twitter: "Would it be fair if a transgender woman won the Miss USA title?"

Culpo gave a sympathetic answer to those who might feel opposed to transgender contestants, but explained that as for herself she was open to competing against a transgender contestant.

"I do think it would be fair ..." Culpo remarked.

She admitted that some people "might be apprehensive" because traditionally the competition was open only to those naturally born female. However, she went on to explain, "There are so many people who have a need to change for a happier life. I do accept that because I believe it's a free country."
